I like living in rural America for the most part. It is like living in a time warp and that is both unique and disgusting. I get all the quirks and quaintness that comes with small town America with heaping sides of intolerance, racism, and a complete disregard for the 1st ammendment.
This is not my first choice as far as places to live go, but i’m happy to have a job and an affordable place with my love.. But holy crap, sometimes I just want to scream.
Like today, for instance- Continue reading
Ok, the inspiration for this post came from the movie Sucker Punch, which I refuse to see until it comes out on dvd. Based on the reviews alone I have chosen not to see the movie, not because of how bad I fear it might be, but because it was marketed as something that could empower women. Let me set the record straight: sexy women beating people up, acting as strippers and prostitutes and getting raped is not empowering! Before you roll your eyes at me please don’t assume I am some insecure woman who hides my body and is anti-sexuality. I am not a prude! I also think I am *quite* sexy thank you very much, and I do take pride in my appearance. HOWEVER, I want my appearance to be secondary to who I am as a person.
So, theres a lot of directions I can go with this, but I’m going to try not to turn it into a huge rant. By the way, I know I said I didn’t want to rant on my blog all the time, and now I haven’t posted in 3 months soooo… something is better than nothing I guess?
I am soooo sick of seeing heroines and lead females being raped. Continue reading
If you have been reading my blog at all you know I touch on a lot of volatile subjects. Recently I’ve been trying to move to more happier and upbeat posts in an effort to not be so negative. Well, fortunately I am a person who goes through phases, and I think that my pallete has grown numb to politics. I still read news and form my own opinions, but for the moment I’ve grown tired of bitching about them. Maybe it’s because I’m happier these days and I no longer need to externalize my inner turmoils in the form of bitter cultural criticism. Whatever the case may be, I like writing, and I need to find new things to write about.
I’ve always been a fan of art and now technology has allowed me limitless resources for inspiration. I like working with my hands and making things, but there’s never been one “thing” that I do or make. Continue reading
With my recent immersion into the field of biology and the beauty of the natural world, I have a newfound reinforcement of my belief that there is no god. With this greater comfort and acceptance of my own atheism, I have opened my eyes to the general opinion of people sharing my stance on life and death. The biggest thing I have noticed about my fellow atheists? Man, are they angry. Continue reading
This morning I read a great snippet of news that really brightened my day. It may not seem like much to anyone else, but here’s the article: click. One thing that has always bothered me about “society” is our strict definitions of the gender roles. Girls have to wear dresses and play with dolls, and boys get their knees dirty and play with toy trucks. You’re either 100% girl or 100% boy. I believe instead that most of us are somewhere in between the two extremes. Somebody can be 75% boy and 25% girl (I’m talking mentally of course, though it’s possible physically), or 15% boy and 85% girl. Continue reading
To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.

I used to work in an office, and I swear I slowly started going mad. There is something horribly, terribly wrong with being forced to sit in an enclosed space for 8 hours a day. Why do we hide from the sun? Continue reading
this is more loosely structured than past posts.. consider it more of a free write.
So I’ve been away for a little bit, apologies. You all know how the holidays are…
Semi-related::; Something has been in the forefront of my mind lately, and that is the general expectation of what a family should be like. We all (if not most) have this image in our minds, an image that has been hammered into the back of our skulls by entertainment and books and religion, of the perfect family. You know, a man, a woman, and a couple of youngins.. a nice little house with green grass and a pooch. Let’s be honest here, that kind of setup rarely works. After witnessing two divorces (and another on the way), alcoholism and incarceration (for child molestation) in my own immediate family I’ve pretty much started to reject the consensus that marriage + kids + home ownership = success. That compounded with a growing appreciation for the environment has led me to a new perspective on “settling.” I still hold out hope that true love does exist, but the capacity in which it can be sustained remains a mystery.
Moving on.. Continue reading
Jude Law, David Letterman, and now, Tiger Woods. With each new cheater that makes headlines comes articles and talk shows posing the question: why do men cheat? I’ve done some research over time.. and some of the answers I have found are disturbing..
In one article, a (male) psychologist and author says that men cheat because “they’ve evolved the desire to be with different women.” While I do support evolution, I do not support this as an acceptable reason for cheating. So basically, men are just zombies mindlessly moving through life via the will of the chemicals in their bodies? With the recent green movement and the issues of poverty and disease and our disappearing natural resources it should be pretty obvious to humanity that there are too many of us. Are people really still holding to the idea that procreation is necessary and ultimately our only purpose? Give me a break! Last I checked there are about 6.8 BILLION people, of which a good handful (respectively) do not even have access to drinking water. Look around fellas, living by the will of your groin is destroying the planet, good job. I think it’s safe to say that we can chill out with the sex, and start EVOLVING a bit to focus our energies on improving the quality of life for ourselves and our children. Continue reading
Ah.. alcohol. I’m a fan. I like alcohol because it gets me over the hurdles of my own inhibitions, it helps me form bonds with new people, and relaxes me when I am strung out or anxious. I think everyone at one point in their life stands to benefit from the consumption of a cold one.
However it has come to my attention that drinking alcohol is nowadays a competition. With the increasing use of social networking sites an increasing amount of party photos get posted. “Look at me I have a social life!” Yes I see that.. and all it consists of is drinking. Let me break it down- getting drunk is very easy. It’s not an impressive feat worthy of praise or recognition. Everybody does it. Good people do it, bad people do it, ugly people do it, pretty people do it. Whoop-dee-freakin-do. I feel pressured to drink in social situations.. almost every time I drink with a group of people I do it because I’m expecting something cool to happen or something to be revealed to me, something big is going to happen and I want to be part of it. I always get let down. It seems to me that the only thing that ever happens is that people act like fools and/or make mistakes. Continue reading

Today on google, for fun I decided to look up how to be writer. I started typing “how to be” and I stopped, because two of the suggested searches were “how to be anorexic, ” and “how to become anorexic.” I am but a young woman of 24, and I am lucky to have been blessed with a good metabolism. I’ve been thin all of my life. However that doesn’t translate to a positive body image my whole life.
